CRYSTALS & ENERGY WORK
Crystals are not decorations, though they are beautiful. They are not magic talismans that do the work for you, though they support your work. They are, in the most grounded sense, tools — ancient, geological, vibrational tools that interact with the human energy field in real and documented ways.
This mini class will give you a genuine working understanding of what crystals are, how they work, and how to build a practice that goes beyond aesthetics into something functional and meaningful.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING WHEN YOU WORK WITH CRYSTALS?
Crystals are minerals formed over millions of years through immense geological processes. They have highly ordered, stable atomic structures — called crystal lattices — that give them consistent physical and electromagnetic properties. Some crystals are piezoelectric, meaning they generate an electric charge when subjected to mechanical stress (quartz is used in electronics and watches for exactly this reason). Others are pyroelectric or have measurable electromagnetic fields.
The human body also has an electromagnetic field — generated by the heart, the nervous system, and the cells. When you bring two electromagnetic fields into proximity, they interact. This is not mysticism. It is physics.
Spiritual and energy workers have understood this interaction intuitively for thousands of years. The science of exactly how it works at the subtle level is still being explored. But the experiential evidence — accumulated across cultures and centuries — is substantial.
THE CHAKRA SYSTEM AND CRYSTAL CORRESPONDENCES
Many people work with crystals in relation to the chakra system — the model of energy centers in the body that comes from yogic and Ayurvedic traditions and has been widely adopted in Western spiritual practice.
There are seven primary chakras:
Root Chakra — Base of the spine. Governs safety, survival, grounding, and the body's physical foundation. Color: red/brown. Crystals: red jasper, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, hematite, obsidian.
Sacral Chakra — Below the navel. Governs creativity, pleasure, sexuality, and the flow of emotion. Color: orange. Crystals: carnelian, orange calcite, sunstone, peach moonstone.
Solar Plexus Chakra — Above the navel. Governs personal power, confidence, will, and identity. Color: yellow. Crystals: citrine, yellow tiger's eye, pyrite, amber.
Heart Chakra — Center of the chest. Governs love, compassion, grief, and connection. Color: green or pink. Crystals: rose quartz, green aventurine, rhodonite, malachite, emerald.
Throat Chakra — Throat. Governs communication, truth, self-expression, and the ability to speak one's reality. Color: blue. Crystals: blue lace agate, sodalite, lapis lazuli, aquamarine, turquoise.
Third Eye Chakra — Center of the forehead. Governs intuition, psychic perception, inner vision, and the ability to see clearly. Color: indigo/purple. Crystals: amethyst, labradorite, purple fluorite, iolite.
Crown Chakra — Top of the head. Governs spiritual connection, higher consciousness, and the relationship between the self and the divine. Color: violet/white/gold. Crystals: clear quartz, selenite, amethyst, moonstone, diamond.
TEN CRYSTALS EVERY BEGINNER SHOULD KNOW
Clear Quartz — The amplifier. Clear quartz amplifies the energy of whatever it is near — including your intentions, other crystals, and your own energy field. It can stand in for any other crystal in a pinch. Pair it with anything to enhance its effect. Program it with a specific intention and it holds that intention.
Amethyst — The calmer and the third eye opener. Amethyst calms anxiety, supports sleep, and opens the intuitive and spiritual senses. A piece of amethyst by the bed supports more restful sleep and clearer dreaming. On the third eye during meditation, it opens psychic perception.
Rose Quartz — The heart healer. Rose quartz works directly with the heart chakra, opening it to giving and receiving love. Use it when healing from loss, when working on self-worth, when calling in a loving relationship, or when you simply need to soften.
Black Tourmaline — The protector. Black tourmaline creates an energetic shield around the aura, absorbs negative energy, and grounds scattered or anxious energy into the earth. Carry it when you are in draining or chaotic environments. Place it at the corners of your home for protection.
Citrine — The abundance stone. Citrine carries solar energy — warm, optimistic, and activating. It is associated with the solar plexus chakra and is used for confidence, creativity, and calling in abundance. Note: most commercial "citrine" is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine is pale yellow to smoky. Both work, but natural citrine tends to carry a cleaner frequency.
Selenite — The cleanser. Selenite dissolves stagnant energy and cleanses the aura. It also cleanses other crystals. Unlike most crystals, it does not need to be cleansed itself — it self-clears. Place it on your altar, use it to sweep the aura, or set other crystals on a selenite plate to charge and clear them.
Labradorite — The magic stone. Labradorite is the crystal of synchronicity, magic, and the space between worlds. It strengthens intuition, protects against energy leaking from the aura, and enhances psychic work. It is also simply extraordinary to look at — the rainbow iridescence (called labradorescence) shifts with the light.
Obsidian — The mirror. Obsidian is volcanic glass — sharp, direct, and honest. It reflects back what we prefer not to see. Use it for shadow work, for cutting energetic cords, and for deep protection. It does not soften the truth. Work with it intentionally.
Moonstone — The lunar stone. Moonstone is connected to the Moon, the feminine, the intuitive, and the cyclical nature of life. It supports emotional balance during transitions, enhances intuition, and has long been used to support fertility, creativity, and psychic gifts. Work with it during Moon rituals.
Lapis Lazuli — The truth stone. Lapis has been revered since ancient Egypt — used by pharaohs, ground into pigment for the most sacred paintings. It activates the throat chakra, supports honest self-expression, and connects the throat to the third eye so that what you speak is aligned with what you truly know.
HOW TO CLEANSE AND CHARGE YOUR CRYSTALS
Crystals absorb and hold energy. When you purchase a new crystal, it has passed through many hands and environments. Before working with any crystal intentionally, cleanse it.
Cleansing methods:
— Moonlight: place crystals outside or on a windowsill under the Full Moon overnight. Safe for all crystals.
— Running water: hold under cold running water for 30 to 60 seconds while intending to clear. Not suitable for soft, friable, or water-soluble crystals (selenite, malachite, calcite, celestite).
— Sound: use a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork to bathe crystals in vibrational sound.
— Smoke: pass through the smoke of a cleansing herb such as rosemary, cedar, or palo santo. The smoke carries the intention of clearing.
— Selenite: place on a selenite plate for several hours.
— Earth: bury in the earth overnight for a deep, thorough reset.
After cleansing, charge your crystal by setting a clear intention. Hold it in your hands, breathe slowly, and speak (aloud or silently) what you are asking this crystal to support.
SIMPLE WAYS TO WORK WITH CRYSTALS
Carry them — Keep a crystal in your pocket or bra to maintain contact with its energy throughout the day. Rotate based on what you need.
Place them in your space — Crystals in your home or workspace create an ambient energetic environment. Selenite and clear quartz in every room. Black tourmaline at entry points for protection. Rose quartz in the bedroom. Citrine in the workspace.
Meditate with them — Hold a crystal during meditation or place one on the relevant chakra point while lying down. Notice what shifts in your body, breath, or awareness.
Create a crystal grid — A crystal grid is an intentional arrangement of crystals in a sacred geometric pattern, activated with a central intention. Grids amplify the energy of each individual stone. Even a simple arrangement of several stones around a written intention has a focused, tangible effect.
Work with them at the altar — Include crystals on your altar as anchors for your intentions, representations of specific energies you are working with, or offerings to your practice.
A BEGINNING PRACTICE
Choose one crystal this week. Not the flashiest or the most expensive — the one that keeps catching your attention. Hold it for five minutes in the morning before you begin your day. Notice what you feel in your hand, your body, your mind. Set one intention for how you want this stone to support you today.
Repeat for one week. Then write down what you noticed.
The relationship between you and a crystal is like any relationship: it develops with time, attention, and a genuine willingness to receive.
