AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDIUMSHIP

UNDERSTANDING THE BRIDGE BETWEEN WORLDS

Grief and love are the same feeling wearing different clothes.

Mediumship — the practice of communication between the living and those who have passed — exists because love does not stop at the boundary of physical death. Those who have crossed over are not gone. They are changed. They exist in a different dimension of consciousness, and the bridge between that dimension and ours is real, is natural, and has been walked by human beings across every culture and time period in recorded history.

This mini class is not about convincing you that communication with the departed is possible. It is for those who already feel, on some level, that it is — and who want to understand what it means, how it works, and how to approach it with integrity.

WHAT IS MEDIUMSHIP?

A medium is a person who acts as a bridge — an intermediary — between those living in physical form and those who have transitioned to spirit. The word medium literally means middle: someone who stands between two worlds and facilitates communication.

Mediumship is distinct from general psychic work, though the two overlap. A psychic reads energy — the energy of the person in front of them, their past, present, and possible futures. A medium specifically receives communication from those who have died. All mediums have some degree of psychic sensitivity, but not all psychics work as mediums.

Mediumship has been practiced under different names in virtually every spiritual tradition:

— The African and Afro-diasporic traditions of Candomblé, Vodou, and Espiritismo work extensively with the spirits of the dead.

— Indigenous cultures across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia have long-established practices of communicating with ancestors.

— Spiritualism as a formal movement emerged in the 19th century and produced the framework of evidential mediumship that many modern practitioners still use.

— Many religious traditions — Catholicism, Yoruba, Shinto — include prayers to, and communication with, those who have passed as a normal part of practice.

HOW SPIRIT COMMUNICATION WORKS: THE BASICS

Spirit communicates through the medium's existing psychic senses — the same clairs discussed in intuition development, now directed specifically toward those in spirit.

A medium may receive:

— Visual impressions of the person (clairvoyance): how they looked, physical characteristics, objects or symbols that carry meaning

— Words, names, or phrases spoken as if from inside the mind (clairaudience): a name, a term of endearment, a phrase this person always said

— A felt sense of the spirit's personality and emotional state (clairsentience): their warmth, their humor, their grief, their love

— Direct knowing about facts, events, or messages (claircognizance): information that arrives complete and certain with no clear source

The medium's job is not to perform or to produce dramatic experiences. It is to receive whatever comes with accuracy and to communicate it clearly. Evidence — specific, verifiable details — is what distinguishes genuine mediumship from generalized statements. A good medium provides evidence first and messages second.

WHAT THOSE IN SPIRIT TYPICALLY COMMUNICATE

The most consistent content of evidential mediumship across practitioners and traditions is strikingly similar.

They communicate: I am okay. I am more than okay. There is no suffering where I am. Whatever fear, pain, or limitation defined the end of my physical life is gone.

They acknowledge: the details of our shared life. The small things that only we would know. The last conversation. The object that holds meaning. The nickname. The inside joke. The regret they want you to know they have released.

They offer: love. Simple, direct, unambiguous love. The most consistent message from spirit is: I love you. I am still here. Continue living.

They reassure: that they were not alone when they crossed. That they knew they were loved. That the relationship between you did not end.

What they rarely do: give winning lottery numbers, tell you exactly what to do with your life, or communicate in ways that make you dependent on medium readings rather than on your own life.

THE SIGNS LOVED ONES SEND

Even without a medium, spirit often communicates directly with those they love. These are some of the most commonly reported signs:

Electrical phenomena — lights flickering, electronics turning on or off, a phone playing a meaningful song at a significant moment.

Animals and birds — a bird appearing at an unusual time or behaving in a notable way; an animal that was meaningful to the person. Many people report visits from cardinals, butterflies, dragonflies, or hummingbirds after a loss.

Dreams — some of the most significant contact happens in dreams. If you have had a dream in which a deceased loved one appeared calm, radiant, and clear — and the dream felt different in quality from ordinary dreaming — this is often considered a genuine visitation.

Scent — smelling their perfume, their cigarettes, a food they loved, or any scent associated with them when there is no physical source.

Songs — hearing their song unexpectedly, on the radio at a meaningful moment, or as a song that seems to appear repeatedly until you pay attention.

Meaningful numbers or timing — seeing the time they were born or died repeatedly, a meaningful date appearing in unexpected places.

WHAT MEDIUMSHIP IS NOT

A responsible conversation about mediumship must include this.

Mediumship is not: proof of life after death in a scientific or philosophical absolute sense. It is evidence — often compelling, sometimes extraordinary — but it is not proof in the way that empirical science requires. Approach it with an open mind and your own discernment intact.

A medium cannot: guarantee specific spirits will come through, deliver messages on demand, or give you perfect information every time. Communication from spirit is not a telephone call where anyone can pick up at any moment. It is more like a radio signal — sometimes the connection is clear, sometimes it is not.

Mediumship should not: replace grief work, therapy, or the natural human process of mourning. The greatest gift a medium reading can offer is a sense of continued connection and peace — not a reason to avoid feeling the loss. The goal is healing, not substitution.

Approach any medium with discernment. A responsible medium offers evidence, maintains appropriate professional boundaries, never charges you with clearing curses or claims they can contact anyone you name on command, and supports your healing rather than your dependence.

DEVELOPING YOUR OWN MEDIUMISTIC SENSITIVITY

Mediumship is not reserved for a rare few. It is a natural human capacity that exists on a spectrum. Some people are naturally more sensitive to spirit communication. All people can develop greater awareness with practice.

If you are interested in developing your own sensitivity:

Build your intuitive foundation first — Mediumship is an extension of intuition. The grounding, stillness, and discernment practices described in intuition development apply here too. Develop your general psychic senses before focusing specifically on spirit communication.

Create the conditions for connection — Spirit communication tends to happen in moments of relaxed, open attention rather than effortful concentration. A quiet mind, regular meditation, time in nature, and consistent spiritual practice all create more favorable conditions.

Sit in development circles — The traditional method of mediumship training is the development circle: a small group of people who meet regularly in a prayerful, protected space with the intention of developing their connection with spirit. This structure has been used for centuries and remains one of the most effective ways to develop safely.

Set clear boundaries and protections — Whatever your spiritual framework, establish a clear practice of setting intention and working only with loving, beneficial spirit. You are in charge of what you invite into your space.

Work with a mentor — Mediumship development is best done with guidance from an experienced practitioner who can help you discern what you are receiving and support you through the process. You can join me once a month at Houss Freya in Montclair.

The thin place — the ancient Celtic concept of the locations and moments where the veil between worlds thins — is not just a geographic location. It is a state of awareness. And it is more accessible than most people realize.

Those who have passed have not gone somewhere unreachable. They have moved closer to the fabric of existence, to the love that underlies everything. The bridge between us and them is built from that same love. It is always there. The question is only how quiet we are willing to become to find it.
