MOON MAGIC 101

LIVING IN RHYTHM WITH THE LUNAR CYCLE

The Moon is the oldest clock we have.

Long before calendars or smartphones, human beings organized their lives around the Moon — when to plant, when to harvest, when to gather, when to rest, when to celebrate, when to mourn. The Moon governed the tides, the seasons of crops, the cycles of the body, and the rhythms of the spirit.

Modern life has largely severed us from this rhythm. But the rhythm has not disappeared. The Moon is still moving through her phases every 29.5 days, still pulling at the water in the ocean, still pulling at the water in your body — because you are mostly water. Your body is a tidal instrument. You were never meant to live as if the Moon were irrelevant.

This mini class is an invitation back into relationship with her.

THE EIGHT PHASES OF THE MOON AND WHAT THEY MEAN

The lunar cycle contains eight distinct phases, each carrying its own energy and invitation. You do not need to work with all eight. Start with the four primary phases and grow from there.

NEW MOON — The Dark Moon, New Beginnings

The Moon is not visible in the sky. The Sun and Moon are aligned in the same sign, beginning a new cycle. This is the time of the blank page — of planting seeds, setting intentions, and beginning what you want to grow over the next month.

Energy: quiet, inward, potential-filled, fertile.

Best for: intention-setting, new beginnings, asking for what you want, starting projects, writing your desires down.

WAXING CRESCENT — The Gathering

The first sliver of Moon appears in the evening sky. This is the phase of building momentum, gathering resources, and taking first steps toward your New Moon intentions.

Energy: hopeful, initiating, slightly effortful.

Best for: taking action toward your intentions, reaching out, beginning conversations, making the first move.

FIRST QUARTER — The Decision Point

The Moon is half-illuminated and growing. This phase often brings a challenge or choice that tests your commitment to what you set at the New Moon. It is a decision point.

Energy: activated, slightly tense, requiring choice.

Best for: problem-solving, making decisions, recommitting to your intentions, adjusting course if needed.

WAXING GIBBOUS — The Refinement

The Moon is more than half full and still growing. This is the phase of refinement and preparation — the final stretch before the harvest.

Energy: focused, detail-oriented, building toward completion.

Best for: fine-tuning, editing, deepening your work, preparing for what the Full Moon will illuminate.

FULL MOON — Illumination & Culmination

The Moon is fully illuminated, sitting opposite the Sun. Everything is lit up — including what you have been half-seeing. This is the harvest of the cycle: the moment when your New Moon intentions (or their obstacles) become visible.

Energy: heightened, emotional, revelatory, completion-oriented.

Best for: releasing what no longer serves, ceremonies and rituals, giving gratitude for what has grown, emotional honesty, charged spiritual work.

WANING GIBBOUS — The Integration

The Moon has peaked and begins to decrease. This is the phase of integration — taking in what the Full Moon revealed and allowing it to settle into understanding.

Energy: reflective, evaluative, digestive.

Best for: journaling, reflecting, sharing what you have learned, gratitude practices.

LAST QUARTER — The Release

The Moon is half-illuminated and decreasing. This phase asks you to actively let go — of habits, patterns, relationships, or beliefs that no longer serve.

Energy: releasing, decisive, clearing.

Best for: ending things consciously, clearing clutter (physical and emotional), forgiveness work, releasing habits.

BALSAMIC / DARK MOON — The Rest

The final days before the New Moon. The Moon is nearly invisible, the cycle almost complete. This is the most overlooked and most undervalued phase: the sacred rest.

Energy: deeply quiet, surrendered, liminal.

Best for: rest, solitude, dreams, forgiveness of self, releasing the cycle, preparing to begin again.

THE MOON THROUGH THE SIGNS

The Moon moves through all twelve zodiac signs approximately every month, spending about 2.5 days in each sign. The sign the Moon is in when it is New or Full adds an additional layer of meaning to the lunation — and the sign the Moon is in on any given day colors the emotional and intuitive atmosphere.

Moon in Aries — Bold, impulsive, motivated, emotionally direct. Good for beginnings and brave choices.

Moon in Taurus — Grounded, sensual, comfort-seeking. Good for slowing down, self-care, and financial intentions.

Moon in Gemini — Curious, social, mentally active. Good for communication, writing, and learning.

Moon in Cancer — Deeply emotional, intuitive, home-oriented. The Moon is most powerful here — this is its home sign.

Moon in Leo — Warm, expressive, dramatic, playful. Good for creativity, romance, and bold self-expression.

Moon in Virgo — Analytical, discerning, detail-oriented. Good for organizing, health routines, and practical work.

Moon in Libra — Harmonizing, relational, beauty-seeking. Good for relationships, aesthetics, and finding balance.

Moon in Scorpio — Intense, deep, transformative, honest. Good for shadow work, emotional release, and deep healing.

Moon in Sagittarius — Expansive, philosophical, freedom-loving. Good for adventure, spiritual exploration, and big-picture vision.

Moon in Capricorn — Disciplined, ambitious, structured. Good for career work, goal-setting, and building lasting foundations.

Moon in Aquarius — Independent, inventive, idealistic. Good for community, innovation, and humanitarian intentions.

Moon in Pisces — Dreamy, empathic, spiritually permeable. Good for creative work, prayer, and dissolving what does not serve.

VOID OF COURSE MOON

The Moon goes Void of Course during the period between its last major aspect in one sign and its entry into the next sign. This can last from minutes to many hours.

During a Void of Course Moon, the general wisdom is: do not begin new endeavors, make major decisions, or launch important projects. Things begun under a VOC Moon tend not to develop as intended — they often drift, stall, or come to nothing.

The VOC Moon is ideal for: rest, routine tasks, inner work, and meditation. It is cosmic permission to slow down and do nothing important.

SIMPLE MOON RITUALS TO BEGIN TONIGHT

New Moon practice:

Find a quiet moment on or near the New Moon. Light a candle. Take several deep breaths. In your journal, write: I am calling in... and allow yourself to list what you genuinely desire for this lunar cycle. Keep it to three to five intentions. Be specific. Speak them aloud before you close your journal.

Full Moon practice:

Go outside if you can and stand in the moonlight, or simply sit by a window where you can see or sense her. Place your hands over your heart. Ask yourself: what is ready to leave? What has been weighing on me that I can choose to release tonight? Write it down, then either burn the paper or tear it and release the pieces. Say out loud: I release this. I make room.

Monthly lunar check-in:

At the end of each lunar cycle, review your New Moon intentions. What grew? What did not? What surprised you? What wants different attention next cycle? You are not grading yourself — you are in conversation with the rhythm.

You do not have to understand why the Moon affects you to begin working with her rhythms. The tides do not understand gravity. They respond to it anyway.

You are a creature of this planet, made of stardust and ocean and ancient memory. The Moon has always been part of your story. She is simply waiting for you to remember it.
