Pluto Retrograde — The Power You Gave Away Is Asking to Come Home
On May 6th, Pluto stations retrograde in Aquarius, where it will remain until October 15th. And while outer planet retrogrades tend to be subtler than, say, a Mercury retrograde, Pluto retrograde carries a particular kind of weight.
Because Pluto rules power.
Not power in the loud, assertive sense. Pluto rules the underground kind of power — the power that operates in the shadows of our psyche, in the unspoken dynamics of our relationships, in the systems we participate in without questioning. The power we hold, the power we surrender, and the power that was taken from us before we knew it was ours to keep.
When Pluto moves direct, we are often pushed to confront and transform these power dynamics outwardly. When Pluto retrogrades, the work moves inward. The question becomes not what is happening out there — but what is happening in here?
Here is what Pluto retrograde is asking you to examine:
Where have you given your power away? This is the central question. Power is given away in many ways — in relationships where we abandon our needs to keep the peace, in work situations where we accept less than we deserve, in patterns of people pleasing and self-erasure, in the deep, unexamined belief that someone else always knows better than we do about our own lives.
What are you afraid of losing? Fear of loss is Pluto's most potent weapon. The fear of losing love, security, status, or approval keeps so many people locked in dynamics that diminish them. Pluto retrograde asks: what if you stopped letting that fear make your decisions?
Where do you have more power than you are using? This is the shadow side of Pluto retrograde that is less often discussed. Not only do we give power away — we sometimes hoard it, withhold it, or use it unconsciously in ways that harm. Pluto retrograde asks for honesty in both directions.
What transformation have you been resisting? Pluto is the planet of death and rebirth. Something in your life is trying to die — a pattern, a relationship, a version of yourself — and Pluto retrograde is asking why you keep trying to resuscitate it.
This retrograde is not here to frighten you. It is here to free you. The power you have given away, the power that was taken from you, the power you have not yet claimed — it is all still yours. Pluto retrograde is the season of getting it back.
