The Body Keeps the Score — But the Body Can Also Keep the Healing
We talk a lot in spiritual communities about the emotional body, the energy body, the soul. And this work is vital, necessary, and real.
But there is something we do not talk about enough: the physical, biological, utterly unglamorous body. The one that gets tired and hungry and sick. The one that carries decades of stress in the shoulders and grief in the chest and unspoken anger in the jaw.
The body does not distinguish between the spiritual and the physical. It simply responds to everything — to beauty and trauma alike, to safety and threat, to love and loss. Everything you have ever experienced lives somewhere in your tissue.
And here is the truth that changes everything: if the body is where the wound lives, the body is also where the healing lives.
This is why we can have profound insights in therapy and still feel anxious in our bodies. This is why we can understand intellectually why we behave a certain way and still keep doing it. This is why the mind alone — however brilliant and willing — cannot complete the healing journey. The body must be included.
So what does healing through the body actually look like?
It looks like slowing down enough to feel. Most of us are moving too fast to feel anything below the surface. Somatic healing begins with the radical act of stopping — and asking the body, with genuine curiosity, what it is holding.
It looks like breath. The breath is the only part of the autonomic nervous system we can consciously control. When we change the breath, we change the state of the nervous system. This is not metaphor — it is physiology. Deep, slow, conscious breathing is one of the most powerful healing tools available to us.
It looks like movement. Not punishing exercise — expressive, intuitive movement. Shaking, dancing, walking, stretching, swimming. Movement that allows the body to discharge what has been stored and return to its natural state of flow.
It looks like ceremony. The reason traditional healing practices — curanderismo, indigenous ceremony, ancestral ritual — have survived thousands of years is because they work. They work because they engage the whole person: the body, the senses, the emotions, the spirit. Ceremony gives the body a container for transformation that the mind alone cannot provide.
It looks like rest. True, undefended, unproductive rest. The kind where you are not catching up on anything, not optimizing anything, not performing recovery. Just resting. The nervous system heals in rest. Not in productivity. Not in busyness. In rest.
Your body is not your obstacle. It is your greatest ally. Give it the same care, patience, and love you are learning to give your heart.
