Healing Is Not Linear (And Anyone Who Says It Is Is Lying)
Let’s start with something that needs to be said plainly:
If you feel like you’ve “done this already” and yet you’re back here again, you didn’t fail.
You’re just human.
Healing is not a straight line. It’s more like a spiral. You revisit themes at deeper levels, with more awareness, different tools, and less tolerance for your own bullshit. That’s growth, even if it feels repetitive.
The problem isn’t that old wounds resurface. The problem is the expectation that they shouldn’t.
Why Healing Feels Repetitive
You don’t heal things once. You heal them in layers.
The first time, you gain awareness
The second time, you notice patterns
The third time, you change behavior
The fourth time, you integrate
Most people quit somewhere between steps two and three because they mistake discomfort for failure.
Healing asks for patience. And yes, that’s annoying.
What Progress Actually Looks Like
Progress looks like:
Catching yourself sooner
Reacting less intensely
Recovering faster
Choosing differently even when it’s uncomfortable
If your reactions are softer, your boundaries clearer, or your recovery quicker, you are healing. Even if the wound still whispers sometimes.
Gentle Practices
Track responses, not outcomes
Notice how long it takes you to return to baseline after emotional activation
Replace “Why am I like this?” with “What is this teaching me now?”
Journal Prompts
What pattern keeps resurfacing in my life?
How has my response to it changed over time?
Where am I being too harsh with myself about my healing process?
